Christmas Holiday Cake Ideas
This Christmas, I stumbled upon an absolutely delightful holiday light cake idea that really brought the festive cheer to my kitchen. Picture this: a cake that bursts with the colors of Christmas lights, making it a vibrant centerpiece on any holiday
The flavor? Mint Cookie!
A refreshing mint cookie, paired with a crunchy mint cookie crumble filling that just dances on your taste buds. And let’s not forget the mint-flavored buttercream frosting – it’s like a creamy dream come true. Every bite was a delightful fusion of Christmas joy and minty bliss. YUM indeed!

Mimicking the twinkling lights commonly associated with the season is a visually appealing centerpiece adding to the overall holiday atmosphere.
**Tip: Add gel food coloring to the cake batter for a brighter green unifying the cake flavor and appearance. Don’t use liquid food coloring as it could change the texture of the batter and the color saturation is weaker than gel.
Materials Needed
This Christmas Holiday Cake decoration was not too difficult to create. You just need a few essential tools to achieve this fun look. I did not have an exact pattern placement in mind for everything. It was fun and free-flowing.
To achieve the look of these festive strings of Christmas lights you will need the following items:
- A cake board or cake drum properly sized to your cake weight/size. There are many sizes and color options. Read more about cake boards here.
- Colored fondant – You can make fondant or buy fondant. I’ve made marshmallow fondant, it tastes great but the consistency and deep colors are hard to achieve, especially the darker primary colors. I prefer to buy it because of the texture and color saturation. Buy high-quality fondant. Don’t scrimp on this. There are many mediocre and frankly, poor brands out there so practice with quality. My go-to brands are Satin Ice and Renshaw.
- Fondant mat and roller – to roll out the Christmas holiday light strings.
- Silicon holiday light bulb mold – there are many to choose from. You can find silicone molds online, in bakery supply stores, or in hobby/craft stores.
Fondant Cake Toppers
You can play with various decorating techniques or tools to replicate the look of holiday lights. Whether you use silicon molds, piping tips, sprinkles, candy, etc; experimenting with different colors, shapes, and arrangements is fun!
It makes for a unique and eye-catching cake but also provides an opportunity to showcase your artistic flair and festive creativity.

A cake design does not have to be complicated, weighty, or cluttered. With alternating colored light bulbs and strings draped about on a white frosted background resting on a solid green cake board make a cohesive cake design. It’s clean, bright, and elegant without being overdone.
**Tip: Never think of your cake board as an afterthought. Meaning, always pre-plan and consider what color or pattern your cake board will be before cake stacking. The cake board must complement your cake design and never compete with it. Why are cake boards important?
This Festive Delights: Unwrapping Creative Christmas Holiday Cake Ideas is versatile and suitable for various holiday occasions. Whether it’s a family gathering, an office party, or a celebratory dinner with friends, the theme of twinkling lights is universally associated with the holiday season.
