Creating this Exquisite Blueberry Fault Line Cake Design is a trendy and visually stunning cake decorating technique that involves exposing the inner layers of a cake to resemble a geological fault line.

The fault line technique can be used on many cakes and for any occasion or theme. The design possibilities are endless showcasing cut-out sections of the cake, making the fault line architectural and modern.

What is a Fault Line Cake Design?

This technique is usually achieved by cutting out a section or sections of a cake and filling it with contrasting frosting colors, piped decorations, ganache, or other edibles such as cookies, candies, fondant figures, chocolate, and the like.

After the cake is frosted, the contrasting section creates a striking “fault line” that runs around the cake, giving it an eye-catching and modern appearance.

How long does it take to create a Fault Line?

It all depends on how simple or complicated your fault line cake design is. How many fault lines are you planning to do? How many frosting colors are you using? How many decorative elements will you incorporate into your fault line/s?

As long as you’re organized and you follow these step-by-step instructions your fault line cake design will go quickly and more efficiently.

How to Create a Fault Line Cake Design

  • Gather Your Ingredients: Start by assembling the necessary ingredients for your cake layers, frosting, and any additional decorations.
  • Bake and Stack Your Cake Layers: Bake your cake layers and stack them with delicious frosting in between. Ensure the layers are even and secure.
  • Create the Fault Line: Carefully carve out a section of your cake layers to simulate a fault line. You can use a serrated knife for precision. You can also use a cake icing spatula to apply the frosting up to a certain height or down to a certain length from the top to be smoothed thereby making your fault line edge/s sharp and precise.
  • Choose Your Decorations: Select edible elements such as colorful candies, sprinkles, edible gold leaf, luster dust, or edible gel to accentuate the fault line.

  • Frost the Cake: Apply a thin crumb coat of frosting to the entire cake, including the fault line area. This helps the final layer of frosting adhere smoothly.
  • Decorate the Fault Line: Pay special attention to the fault line, adding your chosen decorations in a way that emphasizes the geological layers.
  • Final Touches: Once satisfied with the fault line design, add any final touches to the rest of the cake. Smooth the frosting and refine the overall appearance.

Cake Color Palette

For this Exquisite Blueberry Fault Line Cake Design, my cake color palette centered around the soft mauve color that the blueberry fruit reduction created in the fault line buttercream.

Blueberries are naturally dark blue but when you cook them down into a fruit reduction and mix them into white buttercream it lightens up by several shades as it’s a 3:1 ratio.

Three parts buttercream one part blueberry reduction. I could have added dark blue gel food coloring to match the blueberries but decided to keep the mauve as it was unique and different.

The mauve was lovely so I planned to make this blueberry fruit buttercream the primary fault line outer layer while keeping the white buttercream as the cake base color.

Along with the mauve, I added a blueish-purple color to help accentuate the piped florals. The gold was the final “icing on the cake” as they say helping the fault line and cake top edging become an important focal point of the design.
