1. Heart Shaped Cake for Valentine’s
Nothing says Love, Romance, or Valentine’s Day more than Heart Shaped Cakes. You don’t need a heart-shaped pan to pull it off either.
- Simply – make two cakes, one square and one round cake of the same diameter.
- Position your square cake as a diamond on your cake board.
- Cut your round cake in half creating 2 semi-circles.
- Place each semi-circle on either side of your diamond shape. Slightly trim your square cake sides to best fit the semi-circles. Trim and level the cake tops.
- Thinly frost in between the cake pieces to solidify the heart shape. Continue to crumb coat, chill, frost, and decorate your cake as you please. There are so many fun and easy things you can do to make your Valentine’s Cake stand out above all others! Read on….
2. Strawberry Cake Toppings
Using strawberries on a Cake for Valentine’s is an easy way to decorate for this special occasion. To start strawberries look like hearts. Strawberries add a bright and visually appealing touch to cake decorations. They are vibrant in color, and shape, beautiful, and appetizing in appearance.
Whether using whole, sliced, or using them in creative arrangements, strawberries bring a pop of color fitting for various romantic occasions, especially Valentine’s Day, or any event where a burst of red is desired. Strawberries are decadent and will without a doubt make people swoon!
Beyond their visual appeal, strawberries are delicious and complement various cake flavors, adding a layer of freshness and natural sweetness. Don’t just decorate the top of your cake with strawberries use them on the sides and edges as well.
**Please do thorough research on how to prepare, properly store, and use fruits inside or for dessert toppings. Handling/washing fresh or frozen fruit, using cut or whole fruits, glazed or unglazed, temperature storage, and shelf life before serving as well as after serving are all very important things you must be versed in when using fruits in or on top of all your cakes and desserts.
3. Multiple Fruit Toppings
Elevate your cakes and desserts with the natural sweetness and vibrant colors of multiple fruit toppings. The addition of fresh fruits as cake decorations not only brings a burst of color but also contributes to a visually stunning presentation, making your desserts both delicious and Instagram-worthy.
Cake decorating with fruits with their natural goodness adds nutritional value to your treats, making them a guilt-free indulgence that satisfies both the palate and the desire for wholesome ingredients.
**Always do your research on how to prepare, store, and use any fruit/s inside or for dessert toppings. Washing fruit, using cut or whole fruits, unglazed or sugar glazed, storage, and shelf life before serving as well as after serving are all very important things you must be versed in. Many fruit toppings are applied to desserts right before serving so they remain fresh and delicious.
4. Cake for Valentine’s Crumb Topping
Struggling to figure out what design elements to use for your next Valentine’s Cake?? Look no further than cake crumbs! Using cake crumbs as a cake topping is not only brilliant but also the easiest way to decorate cakes. They are colorful, versatile, edible, and soft, add texture to your cake, and are delicious! Oh! and they’re simple to create.
It seems like using cake crumbs as a decorative technique on top or the sides of cakes has not been around too long. This idea was just not done back in the early days when cake design was all about polished and classic sophistication. Cake crumb decorations would have been viewed as lazy or sloppy.
Only within the last few years has it become popular. Similar to the “naked cake style” where we see the rough edges of a cake unfrosted, using crumbled-up cake as a topping is unpretentious, trendy, and modern.
Where do you get extra cake crumbs? Mostly from the cake trimmings. Save the cake topper after it’s cut and leveled. Gently crumble the cake with your fingers and sprinkle at will. The top and larger cut-away cake pieces will have the best color. Hooray for cake crumbs! *Note: Refrain from using the more toasted or overcooked cake trimmings. Tinted cakes such as Red Velvet make the best cake crumb toppers.
5. Piped Rosettes
I love the look of piped rosettes! Rosettes have that beveled effect and a curved layered circular twist that shows a gentle softness and romantic elegance. They’re easy and fun to pipe and they look fantastic!
All you need are a small collection of star piping tips, a few piping bags, a little practice, and you’re in business. Piping rosettes are fun to create and you can get really creative. Piped rosettes resemble flowers and are reminiscent of roses hence the term, “Rosette”.
I’ve always been a fan of the Ombre effect. A layered variation of color from light to dark. It’s up to you how many frosting colors you want to use. The cake size will help determine pattern space, the size your rosettes need to be, or if you’re piping-free style – find the balance with the size and quantity of decorations.
The Ombre effect can be used in many decorating ways. Rows of rosettes, buttercream stripes, or fondant decor are just a few ways to showcase this.
Before you start piping directly onto your cake it helps to practice rosettes on parchment paper, in measured rows, in random designs, and/or with different piping tip sizes.
**Piping Hack: If you’re not comfortable piping directly onto the cake in general do this – pipe your perfected rosettes onto parchment pieces, freeze them, and then gently apply them (with a little bit of fresh frosting underneath) to your cake top or sides. Voilà! Step back and marvel at your creativity.
6. Piped Roses
Frosted Piped Roses elevate your desserts with exquisite floral elegance. These edible beauties not only contribute to a charming presentation but also create a sense of elevated sophistication, making your cakes irresistible and perfect for any occasion.
Roses and love go hand in hand. Piped roses are delicate, intricate, beautiful, and everyone loves them. I won’t sugarcoat it, (pun intended) practice and patience are required but you can do it!
Tools for Piping Roses:
- Piping bags, multiple sizes of flower icing piping tips/nozzles, piping tip couplers, different sizes of cake flower nails, flower lifters, and parchment paper.
You can add more drama and visual interest to your cakes by piping leaves, smaller florals, and additional piped borders or designs. I highly suggest watching video tutorials which can be a huge help when learning decorative piping techniques.
Pipe your roses in one frosting color or experiment with multiple colors coordinating with your cake design, special event or party theme.
The same piping hack for piping rosettes goes for piping roses on cakes. If you feel more confident piping on parchment paper just freeze the flower/s and then gently apply to your cake or baked goods with confidence.
7. Cookie Cutters
Cookie cutters are not just for making cookies folks they are an incredible tool used all the time in imaginative cake design. Elevate your cake decorating skills by ensuring consistent and flawless shapes that add a professional touch to your creations without compromising on creativity. This is how the pros do it.
Long gone are the days when bakers and cake designers had to cut out dough, fondant, gum paste, chocolate, or even candies by hand. Cookie cutters are a designer’s secret weapon.
Benefits of using cooking cutters in cake design:
- There are many bakery supply stores and online companies that carry cookie cutters in various shapes, sizes, and subject content. If there’s a shape cutter you’re looking for you’ll most likely find it.
- Cookie cutters are great for achieving intricate designs efficiently such as outlining, patterns and grids, sprinkles, chocolate, and/or candy placement, framing, lettering, messages, and much more.
- Using cookie cutters is a huge decorating time saver.

Discover how cookie cutters offer a wide array of versatile shapes and designs, allowing you to easily create intricate and visually stunning cake decorations that cater to various themes and occasions.
**Cookie Cutter Tips: Most are not dishwasher safe so always hand wash. Collect over time to build your collection.
Sprinkles are the most incredible thing that’s ever happened to cake design! They help bring a burst of color, joy, and delightful texture to your Cake for Valentine’s Day and/or to all your baked confections. Professionals and budding cake artists alike (myself included) have a secret obsession with sprinkles and how can you blame us? They’re fabulous!
Sprinkles used on cakes and desserts help create a visually appealing and celebratory atmosphere. The creative options are endless. Sprinkles Rock! and I’m here to tell you why.
Here are a few cake design techniques when using Sprinkles:
- A Multicolor Extravaganza: Create a vibrant and joyful look by using an assortment of colorful sprinkles. Whether it’s a mix of classic rainbow colors or a custom blend to match your theme, this option brings a burst of happiness and visual appeal to your cakes and baked goods.
- Subtle Sophistication: For a more refined and elegant appearance, consider using sprinkles in a single color or a monochromatic palette. This option can be tailored to match specific event colors, providing a more understated yet stylish decoration.
- Tailoring Sprinkles to Your Event: Customize your sprinkle design to match the theme of your event or celebration. Whether it’s hearts for Valentine’s Day, or seasonal shapes for holidays, themed sprinkles add a personalized and festive touch to your cakes and treats.
These tiny, vibrant confections can transform your cakes into irresistible treats, adding a playful touch that enhances the overall festive experience. We love Sprinkles! They just make us happy and who doesn’t want that?
9. Frosting Combs
Frosting combs are another ingenious cake-decorating invention. Need a simple yet decorative siding/base that will add volume and texture to your overall cake design? Look no further than frosting combs.
Frosting Combs otherwise known as cake scrapers are wonderful because they have different grid shapes and dimensions, most have two sides, they are easy to use, and are so versatile. Oh, the things you can do! *Best with buttercream frosting.
How cute is my Charming Snoopy Valentine Cake? I used a simple wavy frosting comb to achieve this fun look.
How To use frosting combs:
- After your crumb coat smooth 1/2-1″ layer thickness of frosting (with a straight-edged cake scraper) covering your cake completely. Appropriately gauge frosting thickness with the comb depth so as not to scrape down too deep.
- With the help of a cake turner, use a decorative frosting comb around the cake spinning in a fluid motion to create the edging design. You may need to do this more than once pausing to fill in little imperfections or holes in the frosting and scrape away extra frosting.
**Tips: Clean the comb of excess frosting each time you use it so as not to mess up the areas already smoothed out. Don’t obsess over every little imperfection. You can cover these small areas with any additional decorative elements you plan to use for the cake design.
I’m looking forward to making more cakes using new and interesting frosting comb edges. These combs will instantly elevate your cake design skills to another level.

Piped messages on cakes can in many cases be the main focal point of the cake design. Whether you’re piping buttercream, chocolate, royal icing, or gel icing the piping technique is the same aside from managing the consistency of what type of icing you’re using.
Piping messages on cakes adds a personalized and celebratory touch. Here are a few techniques for effectively piping messages on cakes:
- Using a round piping tip (such as Wilton #3 or #5), fill a piping bag with the desired color of buttercream or royal icing.
- Practice your piping on parchment paper with a steady hand in smooth fluid motions for even lettering before moving to the cake. Measure your writing space!
- Use toothpicks to outline your writing on top of the cake or use the picks to fix any imperfections or adjust spacing.

17. Silicon Molds
Discover the transformative power of silicon molds in cake decorating. Like many cake-decorating tools, silicon molds are another way to help catapult your cake design aesthetic to another league.
When silicon molds came out it seemed like they were mostly used for candy melts and melted chocolate. I paid no attention to them. Then over the years, the variety and versatility of silicon molds expanded exponentially.
Today we have access to bread, cupcake, cake, and cookie baking molds, chocolate/candy/cake/anything on a stick mold, decorative fondant and frosting molds, utensils, silicon dough mats, and the list goes on and on.
Here’s a simple guide on how to use silicone molds effectively::
- Choose the right silicone mold that complements the theme or design you have in mind. Silicone molds come in various shapes, sizes, and patterns, so select one that aligns with your cake decoration vision.
- Ensure that the silicone mold is clean and dry before use. If it’s new, wash it with warm soapy water and allow it to dry completely. For intricate designs, you can lightly grease the mold with a flavorless oil or cooking spray to ease the release of the molded shape.
- Take a small amount of the cake decorating material and press it firmly into the silicone mold, making sure it reaches all the details. Smooth the surface to ensure an even and well-defined shape. Trim excess material from the edges.
- Gently flex the silicone mold to release the molded shape. If you encounter any resistance, you can carefully push from the back of the mold or use a tool with a thin, non-sharp edge to help release intricate details.
- Apply your molded shapes to the cake by using a small amount of edible glue, water, or a thin layer of buttercream to adhere the decorations securely to the cake’s surface.
- Add any additional details or paint the molded shapes with edible food coloring to enhance the overall appearance.
By following these steps, you can effectively use silicone molds to create beautifully detailed and professional-looking decorations for your cakes.
18. Cake Stencils
Like frosting combs cake stencils are even more amazing when it comes to intricate and trendy designs. They create patterned art on a cake!..or any of your baked confections. Many of the stencil designs you can find are so intricate they would be impossible to duplicate by hand.
Cake stencils offer a level of precision and consistency that is challenging to achieve freehand. By using stencils, you can create detailed patterns, designs, or messages on your cakes with sharp, well-defined edges.
Using cake stencils ensures a professional and polished appearance, elevating the overall look of your baked creations. Stencils come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and designs.
Stencils are versatile to suit various themes, events, or celebrations. Whether you’re aiming for elegance, whimsy, or a specific theme cake stencils provide a diverse range of design options.
